Baby Shower Cake - How To Create A Terrific Centerpiece

Baby shower cakes are wonderful centerpieces for baby showers. Guests constantly laugh when they see one and the expectant mom is thrilled to receive a very beneficial gift. They are also called diaper cakes mainly because diapers are it's main ingredient.

Here is the list of items you will need to get for your baby shower cake:

Obviously, you'll need disposable diapers. Assuming you would like to make a medium size diaper cake, you'll need around 45 to 55. You will not know precisely how many until you make the cake. Any diapers left over can always be handed over to the mother-to-be.

You will need a base for your baby shower cake. Get a serving dish of metal, cardboard, or other materials that are reasonably firm. Choose one that's about 14" to 16" in diameter.

Buy a 10' length of 1" wide ribbon and about 60' to 80' of narrower ribbon. This is for tying the individual diapers into rolls.

Every diaper cake needs a central piece. The most usual one used is a baby bottle. Instead of using an empty baby bottle, fill it with something suitable for eating. You could purchase or create small chocolates shaped like baby items, individually packed. Candies are another possible option.

Get other charming, useful things for babies. Such as pacifiers, teething rings, bibs, socks, baby hair brushes, tiny sized soap and shampoo and so on.

Acquire good quality, clear cellophane to cater the final wrapping. Get additional ribbons for tying bows at the top of the cellophane wrapping, if you desire.

Also, have adhesive tape available.

Baking the diaper cake, putting it all together.

While creating a baby shower cake is quite easy, it does require a bit of patience. But when your finished, it is well worth it. Plus the fact that you made it your self makes a terrific impact.

First tie each diaper separately into a roll. Cut a 1' length of the narrow ribbon. Roll up a diaper, then secure it by securing the ribbon around it. Do the same for the rest of the diapers. If you're doing this by yourself, you may want to spread this out over more than one sitting.

Next, you'll create 3 tiers. You can vary the number of tiers to make the cake of the size you prefer.

Make the top tier first, this is the smallest one. Fill up the baby bottle with candies or whatever other items you've acquired. Position the rolled diapers around the baby bottle.

You'll use about 5 to 7 diapers; spot them around the bottle in a standing position. Arrange them securely. Fasten the baby diapers into place by securing a length of narrow ribbon around them. The top tier is now complete.

Next, create the middle tier using about 13 to 18 diapers. Make a tiny circle of about 5 to 8 diapers and tie them together similar to what you did above. After that stand 13 to 18 diapers in a circle around the smaller circle; secure them by tying a ribbon around them. The middle tier of your cake is now complete.

To make the bottom tier, merely repeat this process with about 25 to 35 diapers.

You're on your way to creating the perfect cake.

The following step will secure the bottom tier onto the base. Do this with the adhesive tape. Do not use too much tape, this will cause the diapers to become unusable. Next, place the other two tiers similarly one on top of the other. The center tier, which includes the bottle, goes on top of course.

Put in all those adorable baby items you bought -- pacifiers, hair brush, teething ring, etc. All of these items needs to be attached onto the cake. Insert them into the ribbons you used to secure each layer. Use additional ribbons if needed.

And now, for the finish product.

You've transformed your baby shower cake into a magical thing of beauty with cellophane and ribbons. Place the cake in the center on a cellophane sheet. Gather up the edges of the cellophane and bunch it up attractively at the top. Use ribbons to tie a adorable bow.

Be prepared to amaze the mother-to-be and guests at the baby shower!
